Alcaraz won the first Masters 1000 tournament of the year
Alcaraz is the first player in six years to win the Masters 1000 at Indian Wells without losing a set. In front of rival Medvedev, who had a 19-match winning streak, Alcaraz dominated in both sets thanks to his aggressive attack style. The 6-3, 6-2 victory helped the Spaniard reclaim the world number one position from Novak Djokovic.
Medvedev entered the final with the goal of winning his fourth ATP tournament in a row, after titles in Rotterdam, Doha and Dubai. But against Alcaraz, super defensive ability was not enough to help Medvedev stand. The Russian tennis player could not keep up with the heavy and dangerous hits of the juniors, and many times faltered before Alcaraz's small misses.
Alcaraz has 18 winners after 70 minutes of play, while Medvedev has only five winners. The 27-year-old had no chance of winning a catch game, and didn't save a break point for the entire match. Medvedev lost three serving games, accepting a break in the winning streak over the past month.
Alcaraz was crowned for the first time at Indian Wells. The 19-year-old has won three Masters 1000 and a Grand Slam in his career. Three of his four major titles have come in the United States, with championships at the 2022 US Open, the 2022 Miami Open and the 2023 BNP Paribas Open. Alcaraz is also the youngest person ever to win both Indian Wells and Miami. He is also one of only two players to win three Masters 1000 or more as a teenager, alongside Rafael Nadal.
Alcaraz needs to win the Miami Open, the Masters 1000 in two weeks, to defend the top of the ATP table. The Spaniard currently has 7,420 points, and Djokovic has 7,160 points. Djokovic will lead Alcaraz by 740 points when the Miami Open kicks off, as the teenage tennis player was deducted 1,000 points from winning this tournament last year.
In the BNP Paribas Open women's singles, Elena Rybakina was crowned, after defeating Aryna Sabalenka 7-6(11), 6-4 in the final. Rybakina's first victory over Sabalenka - who defeated her in the final of the Australian Open 2023.
