Alcaraz into the quarterfinals of the Rogers Cup
Alcaraz caused confusion in the third set when it suddenly lost its rhythm after a good start. He led 5-2 after only about 20 minutes thanks to two wins in the game to catch the ball. Alcaraz then served to end the game in game eight and two match-points ahead. However, the Spaniard then lost the beat, missed the opportunity and lost in reverse.
The unstable psychology after game eight made Alcaraz lose the next three games in a row and fall into a situation where he was forced to win game 12 to maintain a chance in the tie-break series. The Wimbledon champion was able to show his class at a crucial moment. He dragged Hurkacaz into the tie-break and soon led 4-1 thanks to two consecutive wins on the ball. Alcaraz then missed two match-points but still won 7-3 on the last serve.
A 14th consecutive win sends Alcaraz into the quarterfinals, meeting either American players Tommy Paul or Marcos Giron. Alcaraz lost to Paul in the second round of the Rogers Cup last year, and Giron just eliminated Holger Rune in the second round this year.
One of Alcaraz's biggest rivals on the way to the Rogers Cup - Jannik Sinner spared no effort in the third round, due to Andy Murray's withdrawal. The Italian tennis player will play another veteran, Gael Monfils in the quarterfinals. The Alcaraz – Sinner match in the semi-finals, if it happens, can be considered an early final.
Daniil Medvedev is the second highest seed left after the third round. The Russian tennis player quickly beat Lorenzo Musetti 6-4, 6-4 to fight Alex de Minaur in the quarterfinals. De Minaur earlier surprised by knocking out eighth seed Taylor Fritz in three sets.
13 of this year's 16 Rogers Cup seeds were disqualified. Casper Ruud is the latest to disappoint when he lost to Davidovich Fokina in the last match of the third round. Ruud extended his slump without a title since the Estoril Open in April.
